Getting Started
Being an
independent Wine Consultant is a relatively new home based business but
it is enjoying a surge in popularity as is wine itself. The idea is a
simple one and is a twist, or shall we say a pop of the cork, on the old
standby home business the Tupperware or other kitchen product party. The
independent consultant holds a party in their home, or at the home of
another where guests are invited to enjoy and taste wines in the comfort
of their own home in a nice social event. Consumers still fin the idea
of going to a wine tasting intimidating, and often buy a wine based only
on the look of a label. Wine merchants especially in supermarkets are
often less then helpful in answering consumer’s questions about wine,
these wine parties are filling a growing consumer need, and are fun.
Start-up costs
You can actually get started
with a home-based business as an independent Wine Consultant
representing a vineyard for as little as 50.00. This will give you a
“Starter Kit" with all you need including corkscrew, Crystal glasses and
training. You should also have a basic home office set up to handle
running your business and booking your appointments. The vineyard you
are representing will help you with advertising and marketing ideas. As
in any Home Based Business – if you have left work to pursue being an
Independent Wine Consultant Full Time, and do not have access to health
benefits through a spouse, you need to include the cost of health
benefits in your monthly budget. More information on Insurance for the
Self-Employed can be found at

Hours and Income
The average wine tasting party
is about 2 hours. The rest of your time you do need to spend running
your business as a fall time business. Keep in mind that the wine
parties are basically social events and as such you will likely be
working nights and weakens. But this may be perfect your schedule. Of
course you will be independent and that is the key, so you can take
other time off, spend other time with your family or take vacations
whenever you want to. In addition to the commissions you make on wind
sales, the vineyard you represent will often have other bonuses and
incentives like trips to fabulous wine countries! Most representatives
will earn at least 100.00 on every event the host, plus residual income
form repeat orders etc. Also there is money to be a made signing up
other representatives like yourself.
Potential Problems
There really are not any
foreseeable Pitfalls or problems with hosting wine parties as an
Independent Wine Rep. Since there is little or no outlay of initial
cash, it’s hard to lose money. The only real problem will be hosting
parties where people just do not buy, or not being able to book enough
parties to make what you want – but your parent Vineyard Company will be
able to help you with these issues.
